Are you ready to begin your Rangi journey?

Rangi Ruru as it stands today is not only a testament to the vision of our founding Gibson sisters but also to the enormous generosity of past Rangi Ruru families — with each generation leaving a legacy for the next.

Our unique educational environment and many of the facilities enjoyed by today’s students exist thanks to individuals and families who have gone and given before. For the school to continue to develop ongoing support and new investment is required. Yet with the majority of tuition fees directed towards operational costs, Rangi Ruru relies on the support of its community to help ensure a sustainable future.

When you support Rangi Ruru you not only support the Gibson sisters’ vision for quality girls’ education, you also support the next generation of leaders, changemakers, artists, eco-warriors, dreamers and innovators.

A gift to Rangi Ruru is an investment in the school’s future, ensuring it remains the leading choice of independent girls’ education for generations to come. Thank you for your consideration.

Why give?

Rangi Ruru is non-profit organisation with the majority of tuition and boarding fees directed towards the operational costs of the school. In addition to this, the Government is slowly reducing its funding of independent schools. Therefore, the school relies on the generous support of its community for its continued advancement.

There are many reasons why we ask you to consider giving to Rangi Ruru, but first and foremost it is because you believe that a quality education is a gift for life. You believe Rangi Ruru is a place where girls will be inspired, challenged and empowered within a community that knows and cares about them.

As well as the intrinsic benefits of giving there is a financial one with the government providing a tax rebate on all donations over $5 NZD. Giving is a powerful way to celebrate and acknowledge the special part Rangi Ruru has played in you and your family’s lives and to ensure future generations will have the opportunity to experience this too.

2023 Annual Appeal

Each year we receive more applications for bursaries and scholarships than the school can offer and so this year we ask you to support our Annual Appeal for bursary and scholarship funds. Bursaries support families who unexpectedly encounter hardship along their Rangi Ruru journey by providing hope and stability, helping students to remain at school to complete their education. Scholarships reduce the financial barrier of boarding or tuition fees, making the dream of a Rangi Ruru education, a reality for others.

If Rangi Ruru holds a special place in your heart and you’d like others to know what it feels like to belong to our Rangi Ruru whānau, we ask you to give generously. You can truly make a difference and impact the lives of day and boarding students, now and in the future and we are incredibly grateful for your support.

Leave a Gift in Your Will

Leaving a gift in your will is one of the most powerful ways you can give. It is an opportunity to continue to support Rangi Ruru after you are gone or to support the school as you have always wanted to but perhaps been unable to in your lifetime.

A bequest can be much larger than any cash gift you can make to the school in your lifetime and the difference it can make to the lives of future Rangi Ruru students, is therefore far greater. You may wish to consider leaving a percentage of your estate—even 1% can make a big difference—stocks, or real estate.

All received bequests are managed by the Rangi Ruru Foundation, a charitable trust registered with the New Zealand Charities Commission (CC23423). The income or capital is then directed to the school in accordance with the benefactor’s wishes.

Miss-Reid

Celebrating Miss Elizabeth Reid’s gift

Elizabeth Reid’s recent bequest to Rangi Ruru will help create a new legacy for the school; one which will benefit many and ensure the school continues to be at the forefront of girls’ education in New Zealand for generations to come.

Elizabeth arrived at Rangi Ruru as a boarder from Invercargill in 1942 to enter what was then called Form 3 (now Year 9). At the time she was desperate to come to Rangi Ruru but couldn’t convince her sister to join her, so she embarked on the journey on her own. She would join her friend Nan Douglas and board the train in Southland for the 12 hour journey to Christchurch. She was terribly homesick but grew to love the school, finishing Form 5 (Year 13) in 1944 before going on to become a nurse. Elizabeth loved to travel and over the years she and her sister Vacy visited many places.

Elizabeth reconnected with the school in 2016 and was visited at her home in Merivale Retirement Village by Principal Dr Sandra Hastie and then Head of School, Meg Dutton. The visit heralded the start of a special connection between Elizabeth and Sandra and over the next few years Elizabeth embraced the school, and on one special occasion was given the grand tour of the school in her wheelchair and a private concert by the school choir, whose performances she loved.

Her affection for Rangi was evident, with her always asking after the students and celebrating the school’s success whenever she spoke with Sandra, truly exemplifying the lifelong connection students make with the school.

Throughout these special years, Sandra and the wider Rangi Ruru community grew to know Elizabeth well, appreciating her sharp mind, sense of humour, and enduring spirit of independence. Rangi Ruru will be forever grateful for her gift.

Atawhai Support a Seat

Rangi Ruru officially opened Atawhai, a new sport and multi-purpose centre in September 2022. This facility forms part of the Project Blue Sky masterplan – the school’s post-earthquake redevelopment steadily being realised.

The school is grateful for the incredible support in helping reach the $5.6million fundraising target so far. There are still a few opportunities to help close the fundraising gap and the school thanks you in advance for your consideration of support.

State of the art retractable seats are yet to be installed in the Elizabeth Reid Gym, turning the sports court into an assembly, performance, conference and celebration space and this is one area where the School would value your support. Every $500 donation gives you a limited and unique opportunity to have your name engraved on a plaque on the back of one of these seats.
