Scholarships for New Enrolments

  • Year 9 Entrance Scholarships
    • Academic and/or Music Scholarships
      The number and value of these scholarships are determined on an annual basis. They are awarded for academic and/or music excellence, but other talents are taken into consideration. They are usually for between 25-50% of tuition fees.
    • Boarding Scholarships
      Boarding scholarships, including the Nancy S.B. McMillan Boarding Scholarship for $5,000 per annum, are offered at Year 9 entry level and available for up to five years of boarding.

    The Year 9 Entrance Scholarship examinations (both Academic and Music Auditions) will be held on 5 June 2013.

  • Year 7 Entrance Scholarships

    For students entering at Year 7, Academic and all round scholarships are offered for between 25-50% of tuition fees for 2 years. In addition, the Rangi Ruru Old Girls’ Association scholarship provides $3,000 per annum, credited against tuition fees for two years. The student awarded the Rangi Ruru Old Girls’ Association scholarship does not need to be a descendant of an Old Girl.

    The examinations for the Year 7 Scholarships will be held on 5 June 2013.

  • NZ Government Aspire Scholarships

    Each year the NZ Government offers Aspire Scholarships to New Zealand students. These scholarships are intended to provide assistance for low income New Zealand families towards the costs of private secondary schooling. Currently the Government will contribute up to $15,000 per year towards the fees of a private school for the duration of a student’s attendance at the school. It will also include a yearly allowance of up to $1,500, to cover course related costs.

How to apply for New Entrant Scholarships

Rangi Ruru has a number of Entrance Scholarships awarded to New Zealand Citizens/Residents each year. Scholarship registrations for girls entering in 2014 have now closed.

Students on our Pre-Enrolment Register are automatically sent scholarship information and registration forms at the beginning of Term 2 in the year prior to their entry. Information packs and registration forms are now available:

There is no charge for sitting the Scholarship examinations and students do not need to be pre-enrolled in order to sit the examinations. All applicants must complete the Scholarship registration forms and return by the due date. All candidates must sit the examinations at the school on the same day. Sample papers from previous examinations are not available. Individual results of the examinations remain confidential to the school.

Please note, completing Scholarship registration forms enters students for the Scholarship examinations only and does not mean they are on our pre-enrolment register for general entry to the school.

Blue Sky Scholarships

In 2011 the Rangi Ruru Board of Governors introduced the Blue Sky Scholarships in recognition of the school’s commitment to the future of Christchurch. We continue to offer these scholarships to Christchurch families affected by the earthquake who have personal, housing or business loss. Blue Sky scholarships are for 50% of tuition fees and are available for Years 7 to 13 for entry in 2014

Scholarships for current Rangi Ruru students

  • Jessie Cook Music Scholarship

    The Jessie Cook Music Scholarship is awarded annually as a result of a legacy to the school from Jessie Cook, a student at Rangi Ruru in 1908. The scholarship will be given to a student in either Year 12 or 13 who shows musical promise and contributes significantly to co-curricular music activities at Rangi Ruru. Preference will be given to students taking Music as a full subject.

    The value of the scholarship is $2,000.

  • The St Andrew’s at Rangi Ruru Organ Scholarship

    The St Andrew’s at Rangi Ruru Organ Scholarship is awarded annually as a result of the generous support of the St Andrew’s at Rangi Ruru Parish.

    The Scholarship provides for weekly organ lessons by Russell Kent. The value of the scholarship is $1,000 per annum. The scholarship will be given to a girl who -
    a) is a current Rangi Ruru student (Year 9 and above)
    b) is a competent pianist to at least Grade 5 level and shows musical promise
    c) has the intention to keep on with her piano lessons in addition to the organ lessons.

  • McRae Peacock Scholarship

    This scholarship, which is funded by legacy, is awarded in general to students entering Year 12, but may go to someone in Year 13, who has achieved a high standard of academic work and who has contributed in various ways to school life and would benefit from this financial assistance.

    The value of the scholarship is up to $4,000.

  • Janice Perry Scholarship

    This scholarship, which is funded by legacy, is awarded in general to students entering Year 12, but may go to someone in Year 13, who has achieved a high standard of academic work and who has contributed in various ways to school life and would benefit from this financial assistance.

    The value of the scholarship is up to $1,000.

  • The Gibson-Webb Exhibitions

    The Rangi Ruru Old Girls’ Association offers the Gibson-Webb Exhibitions to direct decedents of Rangi Ruru Old Girls’ who are currently attending the school in Years 12 and 13.  The Exhibitions are awarded to those girls who demonstrate endeavour, good citizenship and make positive contributions to the school. Three Exhibitions are made annually.

    The value of the scholarship is $750 each.
