Rangi Ruru Top Girls’ School at Maadi 2017

3 April 2017

 U18 Novice 4+

Rangi Ruru retained its position as the top girls’ school at the Maadi Cup over the weekend, finishing an overall 5th equal in the national secondary schools rowing regatta.

Winning three gold and two silver and two bronze medals, Rangi Ruru was the top girls school in the competition of more than 2000 rowers at Lake Karapiro.

The gold medals were won in the U17 coxed four, the U18 novice coxed eight and the U18 novice coxed four. The silvers were won by the U15 coxed eight and the U17 coxed eight. The bronzes went to the U15 and U16 coxed fours.

Director of Rowing, Mark Cotham says all of the girls performed under incredible pressure in a competition that is clearly becoming much tougher each year.

“Rangi Ruru really stood out in the competition as the leading girls’ school,” says Mr Cotham. “There’s keen competition from around the country and our girls held their own as they did last year. We are very proud of them all.”

In addition, six girls have been named in the trial squad for the South Island U18 team. Trialists include Izzie Evans, Sophie McCartin, Isabella Carter, Alice Sproat, Millie Hnight and coxswain Amber Williams. If selected the girls will compete in the North verse South Island regional regatta at Lake Karapiro in April.
