Music Successes

Many of our talented musicians have been selected to be members of regional or national groups including the National Youth Orchestra, National Youth Jazz Band, New Zealand Secondary Schools’ Symphony Orchestra, and the Pettman Junior Academy to name but a few.

Highlights and Achievements 

  • Group Highlights of 2015

    Resolutions won a Silver award at the BIG SING National Finale
    Junior Chorale  won the award for the Best Year 9/10 choir at the BIG SING regional festival
    Nine Rangi Ruru groups took part in the NZCT Chamber music contest, taking out several national and regional awards including National Finalist and Joan Kerr Gold award winner, Winner of the South Island Regional Final, and Christchurch District Final winner
    The Jazz Band and Jazz Combo won Silver
    awards at the CPIT JazzQuest contest, and went on to win Gold and Silver awards respectively at the Southern Jam Youth Jazz Festival
    Year 12/13 band ‘6 of Us’ were Regional Finalists
    in the 2015 Rockquest competition

  • Individual Successes of 2015

    Three of our music scholars won positions in the 2015 NZSO National Youth Orchestra
    A record number of 13 Rangi Ruru girls were members of the 2015 NZSSSO
    Geeny Moon, Year 13, was awarded her DipABRSM on the French Horn. Geeny has recently been announced as the concerto soloist with the NZSSSO for 2016
    Grace Leehan (viola) and Year 12 student Karen Hu (cello) have played professionally with the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra
    Grace McKenzie (violin) won 3rd prize in the Gilbert Glassius competition at the International Akaroa Summer Music Festival
    Isabella Gregory (flute) is co-principal flute in the National Youth Concert Band
    Drummer Karen Hu (Year 12) and trombonist Rebecca Harris (Year 10) were selected for the Christchurch Youth Jazz Orchestra
    Vocalist and guitarist Georgia Saunders (Year 13), won second place in the section Music Inspired by a Shakespeare Play at the the national finalist in the SGCNZ Morison Music Trust Shakespeare Composition Competition
    Xiaoling Liu (Year 11) and Gabby Cresswell’s (Year 13) songs ‘Bruised Knees’ and ‘This Time’ respectively made it to the top 40 in the annual Lion Foundation Songwriting Competition
    Year 7 and 8 students Isabella Carter (Orchestra, violin), Alicia Yee (Concert Band, flute), Imogen Park and Julia Stewart (both Senior Choir) were selected for the special groups in the Christchurch Schools’ Music Festival
    Year 8 student and talented singer/guitarist Amelie Spinks placed third in the YMCA Youth Talent Quest
