Achievement Introduction

Rangi Ruru is consistently in the top 3% of New Zealand schools for year13girls2009academic achievement. In national and international competitions and examinations, a high proportion of students feature at the top of their chosen fields of endeavour. More than 90% of Rangi girls go on to further tertiary study in New Zealand and overseas.

It is important to us that our students are exposed to a wide range of opportunities, both inside and outside the classroom. We are not 'just' an academic school, and we appreciate that not all girls are “straight A academic students”.

We see our role as providing the environment and support to encourage girls to reach their full potential and to find the interest in which they excel. Academically, students are supported to optimise their unique abilities in a number of ways including extra tuition, acceleration, extension and enrichment.

Until their senior years, students are grouped into classes of peers of similar ability. Specialist trained staff work closely with students who require learning support, or show particular interests, talents or gifts. In order to reach their individual potential, identified girls may be further challenged through extension, acceleration or multi-levelling.

The school has adopted the NZ Curriculum Key Competencies and Art Costa’s Habits of Mind.  Underpinning everything we do at Rangi Ruru, are the School’s values of Respect, Aroha, eNdeavour and enthusiasm, Generosity of Spirit and Integrity. These form the basis for our relationships and expectations of each other, inside and outside the classroom.

Class size is kept to a maximum of 26 students, though many senior students may be in classes of fewer than 12. We maintain a student/teacher ratio of around 12 girls to each teacher. Small classes enable Rangi Ruru teaching staff to know their students well, monitor their progress, develop lessons to the needs and interests of students and provide many opportunities for interactive and collaborative learning.

Academic Achievements 2008

We are delighted with the girls’ 2008 results, now official. We congratulate the girls, and the teachers who worked with them, on a wonderful set of results.

At Level 1 100%, Level 2 99.2%, and Level 3 91.9% of the girls achieved success and have been sent their certificates. Certificates endorsed with either excellence or merit were achieved by 85.7% at Level 1, 71.2 % at Level 2 and 66.7% at Level 3. University Entrance was gained by 94.6% of those in Year 13.

The girls’ results in New Zealand Scholarship are superb. A total of 42 scholarships were gained, including six at Outstanding level. Of the girls who entered for scholarship, nearly 30% were successful.

By achieving 50 credits of Merit or Excellence grades, students receive endorsed NCEA certificates. This provides a good incentive for the girls, as illustrated by the proportion of Merit and Excellence endorsements gained at Level 1 (85%) at Level 2 (70%) and at Level 3 (61%).classgirl2009

Compared to other Decile 10 single sex girls’ schools, Rangi Ruru’s academic results look very good indeed and we are delighted with the results of all the hard work by the students and their teachers in 2008.

We congratulate Year 10 student Yangtong Xiang who gained 75 credits in her three NCEA Level 1 subjects, including six excellence grades in Chinese. Other strong individual results include students gaining certificates at two levels in the one year. Julia Errington gained Level 2 with Merit and Level 3 plus University Entrance, Cassandra Rea gained both Level 1 and Level 2 with Excellence and Sariska Adams gained Level 1 with Excellence and Level 2 with Merit. These are outstanding achievements.

The Scholarship results, which included 42 scholarships with six at Outstanding Performance level, were excellent. Georgina Allison, Jenny Yun, Georgina Gray, Rachel Trangmar, Arabella Waghorn and Toni Green gained Outstanding Performance scholarships and we are delighted with their success at such a high level

Rachel Carpenter, a Year 12 student, gained a scholarship in Mathematics with Calculus to add to the Statistics and Modelling scholarship she gained in 2007. Other highlights included the three scholarships gained by both Cara Chimirri and Nina Chambers, which have earned them high monetary rewards.

In Visual Arts, 17 students gained scholarships, including three at Outstanding Performance level. It has been a source of contention over the past few years, that students could be awarded only one scholarship in Visual Arts, regardless of their actual achievements. We are pleased to note that from 2009, this position will change and students meeting Scholarship requirements in more than one Visual Arts subject will now get the recognition they deserve. We congratulate all our 2008 students and wish them well for their studies in 2009.
