Outdoor Education

OutwardBound-2008All Rangi girls partake in a wide range of learning experiences outside the classroom, as an extension of their studies, as part of a year level or school-wide programme or on camps and excursions. These experiences provide opportunities for girls to explore and enhance their leadership and team skills, to see their learning in action and to participate in practical activities which reinforce their learning outside the classroom.

These experiences help girls develop confidence, resilience and adaptability, to challenge themselves and learn to responsibly evaluate and manage risk. Additionally, experience of education outside the classroom enables students to develop strategies to overcome perceived barriers as well as skills of cooperation, problem solving, self awareness and tolerance.

Formal Camps are held in Years 7,8, 9 and 10. Year 11 girls attend an optional two-week course at Outward Bound. At the end of Term 3, Year 12 girls hone their teamwork skills and prepare for their roles as Year 13 school leaders at camp in Hanmer Springs.

Through an extensive outdoor education programme, Rangi girls learn new skills and test themselves in a safe and secure environment. The girls, for example, have the opportunity to try abseiling, rock climbing, camping out, river crossing and a wide range of other challenging experiences. Beneficial for the full personal development of students, this instruction takes place under the strict guidance of trained instructors in a safe and controlled environment.

World Challenge

This is a new programme managed by World Challenge which offers an expedition opportunity to parts of the developing world. It is available to students in Year 9, 10 and 11. It involves an 18 month planning, training and fundraising phase and an opportunity to research the destination and build the itinerary.

The expedition provides students with valuable experience in teamwork, communication and leadership skills in a challenging and fascinating environment. They will have opportunities to lead the team, manage the budget, liaise with local guides, experience a rich culture and participate in a community project. We selected Vietnam-Cambodia as a first destination and a group of 16 students, 2 staff members and the World Challenge Team leader embarked on this exciting venture for four weeks over the 2010/2011 term break.
