Learning Support and Extension

teaching2009Not all girls are "straight A students" and Rangi Ruru does not select students on academic ability. Our role is to provide the environment and support to encourage each girl to reach her full potential and to find the interest in which she excels.

Each individual student, her parents and her teachers meet annually to discuss and develop a Personal Development Plan (PDP) to identify her individual learning goals and maximise her opportunities for success. These PDP's are reviewed regularly with students during the year.

Regular programmes of additional support are offered in reading and language, mathematics and ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages).

teaching22009Students are helped to optimise their unique abilities in a number of ways. Students in Years 9 to 11 are grouped to ensure that all girls are challenged and supported in their learning. Students are supported and challenged within an inclusive classroom environment, with extra tuition provided by specialist staff in our Learning Centre. The school's Learning Centre offers a dedicated area with specialist staff and technology to support individual learning needs.

For very able students, academic acceleration, opportunity to dream, to aspire, to achieve the extension, enrichment and challenge is provided by the school through dedicated subject teachers with additional specialist mentoring through the school's GATE staff.

Education research recognises the important role a student's peers play in their secondary school achievement and we find that the individual attention from their teachers, coupled with close peer support offered by the girls to each other, is often the encouragement girls need to exceed their own expectations.

Sometimes students require additional help with their studies. Tutoring can be arranged in all subjects.

Special Needs & GATE Programmes

The school's aim is to help students feel successful and motivated. In order to achieve this aim, school programmes can be tailored to fit individual needs.

Learning Support

Where a student has a particular learning need, a specialised Learning Support programme can be arranged, in consultation with the student, her parents and teachers, and any relevant agencies.
