Earlier ArtistsTerm 3, 2003 - Barry Cleavin
Barry has been working on drawings and zinc plate etchings in the Artist in Residence studio at Rangi. We have had a wonderful term watching him develop, etch and print a variety of images. He has spoken to junior and senior art students, which has been interesting and entertaining. Next term,Year 13 printmakers will do a weekend workshop with Barry on zinc plate etching. Then on Wednesday 15 October Barry Cleavin and Dee Copland held a joint exhibition in the Boardroom in Te Koraha. The exhibition is titled “Taking Up Residence ” and will feature works produced during this shared residency. Term 2, 2003 - Dee Coupland Dee Coupland has been our Printmaker in Residence throughout Term 2.Dee is an accomplished New Zealand printmaker and it has been a privilege to have her working with students. She is also working towards an exhibition in the new art gallery in 2004.This exhibition will be based on an Antarctic trip Dee went on over the summer of 2001/2002. This term Dee has worked with Year 10 students on a project developing a self-portrait image into a dry point etching on plastic. The students have enjoyed seeing Dee ’s work, her studio and learning new methods of art making. Term 2 and 3, 2003 - Apirana Taylor Apirana Taylor, the noted poet, writer and musician, has been working with a small and passionate group of creative writers. These girls have responded very well to this talented tutor and are working towards a performance night,in which they can showcasse their creative output. Apirana has also worked closely with the English Department. Some Year 11 students have studied his short stories for the NCEA in English; it is very rare to be able to talk to the actual writer. Term 1, 2002 - Kristy Gorman Term One 2002,we were fortunate to have artist Kristy Gorman with us. Kristy Gorman is based in Christchurch and is a graduate of the Fine Arts School at the University of Canterbury. Kristy's paintings are remarkably quiet and seem to invite long, lingering looks. The careful balancing tone and content in the works (whether hung singularly or in braces) draws one into the works. Then Rangi Ruru Head of Art, Helen Calder said of Kristy's work "She uses a variety of materials and approaches. Seeing her at work has extended our students' own ideas about painting". 2001 In 2001 we had four resident artists, with our Performer in Residence and Composer in Residence new to the programme. We believe that we are the only school in New Zealand to offer the variety of residencies we have had in 2001. |
