About Rangi Ruru

tekorahaRangi Ruru Girls' School has a long and distinguished history in the education of young women.

In 1889, two sisters, Helen and Alice Gibson founded Rangi Ruru with the intention of creating a school where girls were nurtured and challenged and where a wide range of opportunities was available to them. Over one hundred years on, Rangi Ruru Girls’ School builds on the Gibson sisters’ dream and has firmly established itself as a setting where girls can pursue their individual goals in a supportive and challenging educational environment.

At the core of Rangi Ruru's philosophy is a commitment to the needs of the individual, close relationships with our student, parent and wider community and to our community values of Respect, Aroha, eNthusiasm and endeavour, Generosity of spirit and Integrity.

The school now offers an independent (private) education to approximately 700 girls in Years 7 to 13, including 120 boarders in Years 9 to 13 who live onsite in our school boarding house.

Being an independent girls’ school means we can offer a broad curriculum to suit the needs of our girls and we have the ability to offer students more flexibility around their subject choices, the number of staff we employ and our school resources. We attract high quality, committed teachers and our independence enables us to offer them more influence in the school’s planning and decision-making.

Our teachers have fewer co-curricular demands on their time and classes with lower student to teacher ratios. These factors enable teachers to give girls more individual attention and to focus on planning creative and interesting lessons. To support the demands of a wide ranging curriculum, we utilise technology and facilities of the highest quality.

In recognising that the teenage years for girls may be challenging, Rangi Ruru has a strong pastoral care support structure including School and Peer Leaders, teaching staff, tutors and deans, boarding staff, counselling support and our school chaplain. We work hard and we have a lot of fun because we believe balance is essential for a healthy life.

Our approach to education is aimed at ensuring girls want to come to school, that they are keen to learn and to extend themselves, and that they feel secure enough to do so. We place great emphasis on preparing girls for the world of opportunities that awaits them. Every girl is encouraged to reach her individual academic potential and we believe her social, spiritual and physical progress to be equally as important.

Rangi Ruru does not select students on their academic ability, our student community contains individuals with wide ranging and diverse abilities in all aspects of school life, particularly academic, sports and cultural or creative pursuits. We believe all girls have skills, talents and interests that need fostering or await discovery.

Every year Rangi is placed in the top New Zealand schools for a wide range of Academic, Sport, Creative and Cultural activities, competitions and events; with more than 90% of Rangi students going on to further tertiary study in New Zealand and overseas.

All girls are given the opportunity to develop team, leadership and life skills in a supportive and challenging educational and recreational environment. Through co-curricular and school programmes including Christian Living, Community Service and Student Exchange Programmes, girls are exposed to the world though the eyes of others. We aim to represent our wider community in the diverse backgrounds and viewpoints of our school community and recognise the range of viewpoints and understandings that each student adds to the school community.
