About Us

Rangi Ruru Girls’ School is an independent (private) day and boarding school for girls Years 7 to 13 and is located in Christchurch, New Zealand.

Our focus is on providing girls with the tools and skills they need to be the very best at whatever they choose to do. We realise that the knowledge gained and the connections formed at Rangi Ruru will stay with you for life. Click here to learn more about “Rangi. For Life.”

Rangi Ruru Girls’ School was founded in 1889 by Miss Helen Gibson, and was administered by her and her sisters for nearly 60 years. The sisters wanted to create a school where girls could flourish and excel. Today, the school continues to build on that dream and has established itself as one of the leading independent girls’ schools in New Zealand.

Our mission is to inspire, challenge and empower girls to release their potential through a diverse range of wonderful opportunities and experiences. Everything we do is aimed at encouraging each student to be the best she can be by providing her with the knowledge, understanding and skills, and a strong set of values, that will enable her to pursue her individual goals and to become a good citizen. The Rangi Ruru environment is both supportive and challenging, where ‘having a go’ is celebrated and where learning is personal.

We want each girl to become a competent, connected and curious young woman with the belief in herself to pursue her dreams and the ability to contribute positively to her community.

Rangi Ruru is part of the Presbyterian network of schools and also welcomes a diversity of beliefs. Our values of Respect, Aroha, Enthusiasm and Endeavour, Generosity of Spirit and Integrity are based on Christian values and underpin everything we do.

We are a student centred school and because we are independent we have the ability to make our own decisions based on the needs of our students. Our curriculum reflects student needs, as does the range of enrichment and support programmes. Small classes enable more personalised teaching and learning which ensures every student gets the attention and focus they need. Our professional and experienced staff are well supported with ongoing professional development and are dedicated to inspiring, challenging and empowering our students throughout their time with us at Rangi Ruru.

Ensuring our girls feel secure and confident in the environment around them and that they are keen to learn and want to extend themselves each and every day, is at the centre of what we do at Rangi. Our approach to education means we place great emphasis on preparing girls for the world of opportunities and challenges that await them; ensuring they have the skills and attitude needed to take advantage of those opportunities and challenges.  Every girl is encouraged and supported to reach her individual academic, social, spiritual and physical potential.

Every year Rangi Ruru is among the top New Zealand schools for a wide range of academic, sporting, creative and cultural activities. More than 95% of Rangi students go on to further tertiary study in New Zealand and overseas, many gaining substantial scholarships as a result of their work at school.

It takes a collective effort to nurture strong and independent individuals and our focus is on building a community of support and care across and beyond our school. We understand that the teenage years can be challenging, and we have a strong and extensive pastoral care support structure in place. The triangle of school, parents and daughter is an important one.

Through the extensive curricular and co-curricular programmes, girls have the opportunity to learn in a dynamic environment, to try new things and to embrace new ideas. They are encouraged to become informed and involved members of society, to think about the world around them, to contribute and to belong.

Our motto is “Whaia to Te Rangi – Seek the Heavenly Things”.
